Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has tasked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Barrister Nyesom Wike to avoid vindictive policies and actions that may victimize political opponents.

The group, through its National President, Hon. Khalil Mohammed Bello, gave the charge in a statement signed and made available to news Men on Tuesday.

KACRAN also urged the minister to treat all citizens with equity, justice, and fairness.

“We at KACRAN believe that President Tinubu’s decision to appoint Barrister Wike, the first Southerner to hold this position, is a significant step towards fostering unity and understanding among Nigerians.

“Barrister Wike’s appointment symbolizes a new strategy to strengthen the mutual relationship and brotherhood among Nigeria’s confederating units”, the statement stressed.

It urged the Minister to continue to remain open to constructive criticism and to consider it as an opportunity for growth rather than a personal attack.

“We also urge him to remember that his role as FCT Minister is one of the most sensitive positions in Nigeria, given the diverse interests of Nigerians in the city of Abuja.

OPay insures deposits up to N5m, reassures customers of enhanced financial security

Published

on

By Esther Agbo

OPay, a prominent Nigerian fintech company has confirmed that its customers’ deposits are now insured up to N5 million, in line with the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) industry standard.

In a statement released on Sunday, OPay highlighted this commitment to financial security, noting that it aligns their practices with those of other commercial banks in Nigeria.

This development follows the NDIC’s May announcement, which increased the maximum deposit insurance coverage from N500,000 to N5 million per mobile money operator subscriber. This adjustment significantly enhances the protection for OPay users’ funds.

The Managing Director/CEO NDIC, Bello Hassan, at the press conference announcing the increase, stated, “The revised coverage is a strategic balance between protecting depositors and ensuring the stability of the financial system.

These changes aim to extend protection to a larger percentage of the population, enhance financial inclusion, and mitigate the potentially destabilising effects of bank runs.”

Additionally, Hassan said that the enhanced coverage is supported by the NDIC’s solid financial backing, premium collections, and robust supervisory and resolution frameworks as stipulated in the NDIC Act No. 33 of 2023.

He emphasized that this infrastructure is crucial for maintaining depositor confidence and financial system stability.

According to OPay, “This strategic enhancement not only aims to protect depositors but also encourages market discipline among banks and MMOs. By increasing the insured amount, the NDIC seeks to prevent unnecessary risk-taking by financial institutions, thereby reducing the potential for destabilising bank runs.

“OPay’s alignment with the NDIC’s revised insurance coverage standards underscores its dedication to safeguarding user funds and promoting financial stability. With this new level of insurance, OPay users can now have the same confidence in the security of their deposits as customers of other commercial banks.

This move contributes significantly to a more inclusive and resilient financial ecosystem in Nigeria.”

Founded in 2018, OPay aims to make financial services more inclusive through technology, offering various payment services such as money transfers, bill payments, airtime and data purchases, card services, and merchant payments.

Licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and insured by the NDIC, OPay now provides the same insurance coverage as other commercial banks.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized cartons of aphrodisiac products and sex enhancment drugs worth N12 million in Sokoto.
NAFDAC Coordinator in the state, Mr Garba Adamu, stated on Monday that the agency’s patrol team made the seizures during routine patrol operations across markets in Sokoto and environs.

Adamu explained that the products were unregistered, highly unsafe due to dangerous ingredients used in the preparations, and an eyesore because of the blatant use of pornographic pictures on the packages.

He appealed to the public to desist from buying such products from unlicensed premises and only patronize registered and safe products from licensed outlets.
” We also call on the general public to always report hawkers and dealers of such products to NAFDAC, as well as report any adverse reactions they may get from taking such products or any other regulated products.
“Some marketers are in the habit of dumping expired or about-to-expire products in markets in Sokoto and environs, while some are taken to border markets and rural areas for consumption,” he said.
The coordinator cautioned traders against selling adulterated, counterfeit, unregistered and expired goods to the public, reiterating that NAFDAC would continue the enforcement at all the times.
According to him, the operation was also extended to the agrochemicals and cosmetics stores, part of the agency’s efforts to ensure that quality and right products were in circulation in the markets.
He urged Nigerians to always check the NAFDAC registration levels as well as the manufacturing and expiry dates of items before using them.
Adamu commended sister agencies, law enforcement agencies, traders’ associations, individuals and groups for their supports to NAFDAC toward safeguarding public health.
