NGO raises concern over consumption of illegal drugs by PWDs

A non governmental organisation, Eye Opener Youth and Women Foundation, says some unscrupulous persons are luring People Living With Disabilities (PWDs) to the use of illegal substances.

Gormwa Gotus, the unit Head and women leader of the Eye Opener Foundation in charge of educating PWDs in Kaduna state, gave this indication on Friday, at a sensitization programme organized by the NGO as part of its activities to celebrate this year’s World Tobacco Day with PWDs.

According to her, the organisation has noticed that some physically-challenge persons are already into drug abuse, and this informed the decision to visit them and sensitize them on the danger of drug abuse.

“I told them that the abuse of substances, including tobacco smoking, can worsen their situation,

“We found it necessary to educate them on the danger of tobacco smoking,” she noted, and called on government and well-meaning Nigerians to give close attention to persons with disabilities to be able to tackle the problem.

In an interview, the founder of the foundation, Margaret Julius, expressed sadness over the situation, saying the foundation has embarked on sensitising PWDs at the Kaduna State Disability Affairs Centre, Kakuri, on the danger of substance abuse.

On his part, the Massager, Kaduna State Disability Affairs Centre, Kakuri, Awwal Shu’aibu, thanked the foundation for its support to improve the life of people with disabilities.
