Showunmi lauds INEC, optimistic of Atiku’s victory
Bankole Taiwo, Abeokuta
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Otunba Segun Showunmi has hailed the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC (INEC) for improving on efforts to conduct free, fair and credible polls especially with the introduction of Bimodal Verification and Accreditation System (BVAS)
Otunba Showunmi explained that involvement of technology in the electoral process of the country would no doubt help to curb unnecessary human interference and this will impact on the integrity of the whole procedure as well as the outcome of such elections.
Showunmi who spoke to journalists shortly after casting his vote at Oju Agemo Ward 6, unit 2, Abeokuta equally commended the peaceful process of the election even as he noted that the turn-out was not encouraging.
He revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari has laid a legacy in the sense that for the first time in the history of the country, Nigerians voted for candidates of their choice without the usual display of cash to induce voters.
Showunmi said against the erroneous belief that elections are impossible without physical cash, the Saturday poll was an eye-opener that money is not a major influencer if the people have made up their minds.
Reacting to whether the procedure is adjudged free and fair, Showunmi advised the government that the only way to increase maximum participation of the people is to emulate the template of Brazil in which all citizens are duty bound to vote, by this no one is allowed to sit on the fence.
He added that he was quite optimistic that his party’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar will eventually carry the day describing him as a man of huge competence and political leader under whose leadership Nigeria will blossom again.
