2022 World Cup: FIFA announces new date for kick off

Published

on

FIFA has confirmed that the 2022 World Cup will now kick off on Sunday, November 20, rather than the initially scheduled date of Monday, November 21.

The first game will now be between the host nation Qatar and Ecuador instead of Senegal’s match against the Netherlands.

This means the tournament will be extended to 29 days, with the final taking place on Sunday, December 18.

FIFA confirmed this on Thursday, in what was a unanimous decision by a committee comprising FIFA president, Gianni Infantino and presidents of the six continental soccer bodies

“The change ensures the continuity of a long-standing tradition of marking the start of the FIFA World Cup with an opening ceremony on the occasion of the first match featuring either the hosts or the defending champions.

“The decision followed an assessment of the competition and operational implications, as well as a thorough consultation process and an agreement with key stakeholders and the host country,” FIFA said in a statement.

Plateau State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (PLASCHEMA) is actively seeking media collaboration to achieve its ambitious goal of full Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in the state by 2030. Dr. Agabus Manasseh, the Director-General of the Agency, emphasized the importance of media partnership during the agency’s quarterly media interface in Jos, with the theme; “Media: A Tool for Sustainable Development”.

Dr. Manasseh highlighted the pivotal role of the media in the agency’s mission, noting that journalists serve as gatekeepers in disseminating crucial information to the public, particularly those in hard-to-reach areas. He stressed that effective collaboration with the media is essential for raising awareness about the benefits of the UHC scheme through avenues such as jingles, news reports, and features.

In response, Mrs. Ayuku Pwaspo, Chairperson of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau chapter, assured PLASCHEMA’s management of the unwavering support of journalists in disseminating information to achieve the agency’s 2030 mandate.

Established in 2019, PLASCHEMA is tasked with ensuring access to affordable, equitable, timely, and quality healthcare, with financial security for all residents of Plateau State, regardless of their socioeconomic status.

The Adamawa State Government has postponed the reopening of primary and secondary schools for the third term academic session to May 13th. This decision aims to facilitate the vaccination of children against measles.

Hajiya Aisha Umar, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, announced the extension in a statement issued on Monday in Yola.

Initially slated for May 6th, the resumption date has been pushed back to May 13th to address the measles outbreak affecting parts of the state. Umar noted that the disease has already impacted some children.

“In light of this situation, the Executive Governor of Adamawa, Ahmadu Fintiri, has instructed that all schools, both public and private, should remain closed for one week,” Umar stated. “The new resumption date is set for Monday, May 13th, to allow the task force to conduct an extensive vaccination campaign targeting all children.”

Expressing regret for any inconvenience caused by the sudden extension, she emphasized the importance of prioritizing children’s health and safety.

Recent reports have indicated that a measles outbreak claimed the lives of 42 children in Mubi North and Gombi local government areas of the state.
