President Buhari inaugurates Presidential council on e-government and digital economy

…Directs digital economy minister to chair council

Nigeria’s President Muhammad Buhari (GCFR) has inaugurated the Presidential Council on e-Government and Digital Economy.

The ceremony which took place on Friday, 10th June 2021 at the State House, affirms the administration’s commitment to the advancement of the country’s Digital Economy.

The President in his address disclosed that “the council will provide the oversight that will provide a veritable structure for accelerating our achievements in Nigeria’s digital economy and in the implementation of e-government. This is part of our efforts to take advantage of digital technologies to transform every sector of our economy”.

Emphasising the importance of the council and the pivotal role it has to play in economic development, the President noted that “the inauguration of the Council is in line with global best practice and will serve to provide the leadership and structure required to accelerate the impressive gains in the two domains. This Council has been rightly called the Presidential Council on e-government and Digital Economy and this reflects the high level of priority that we place on the Council. I hereby direct the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy to chair the Council on my behalf and provide me with regular updates”.

He urged the Council members to see the task as a national assignment which indicates the trust reposed in their ability to support and significantly enhance the digital transformation of Nigeria.

Earlier in his address, the Chief Host and Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami), while expressing the sector’s profound gratitude to the President for his immense support, described the event as “a landmark achievement and a significant milestone in the development of our digital economy and the promotion of government digital services in Nigeria. The Presidential Council will serve as the coordinating body for the implementation of digital economy programs and those that relate to the implementation of Government Digital Services (GDS)”.
