52-year-old man docked over alleged fraud, assault in Lagos

The Police on Wednesday arraigned a 52-year-old man, Edwin Anidi, before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, over alleged fraud and assault.

Anidi, of no fixed residential address, is facing a three-count charge of fraud, stealing and assault.

The Defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, ASP Clement Okuoimose, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 31, at about 2:00p.m. at Balogun Market, Trade Fair Complex, Lagos.

Okuoimose said that the defendant obtained the sum of N280,000 from the complainant, one Obiageli Ike, under the pretence that he would help her rent a shop, which he did not do.

“The defendant also converted the N280,000 to his personal use.

“The defendant attacked the complainant and stabbed her with a broken bottle on her hand causing her body injury.

“Anidi also assaulted the complainant by tearing her dress valued at N5,000,” he said.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 314, 287, 172 and 339 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Fadahunsi Adefioye, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

Adefioye said the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The Chief Magistrate adjourned the case until May 11, for mention.
