Police arraign man, 55, for alleged rape of minor in Benue

The Benue Police Command on Tuesday arraigned one Ordye Orpin, 55, for alleged rape of a 14-year-old before a Makurdi Upper Area Court 2b.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Rachael Mchiave told the court that the case was received at State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Makurdi from “A” Divisional Police Headquarters Gboko on Friday.

Mchiave averred that one James Igbana of Chikan Street, Rice Mill, Gboko West, had reported the case at ‘A’ Division Police Station Gboko on March 10 before it was forwarded to the SCID.

Mchiave said Orpin of Genger Village, Gboko Local Government took the niece of the informant to Gura Village, Gboko under the pretext that he was going to treat her.

“On his way, the accused forcefully had sexual intercourse with her against her wish and was arrested.

“However, during our investigation, the accused confessed to have committed the offence.

“Investigation into the matter is still ongoing and we need more time to complete it,” he said.

Mchiave said the accused contravened Section 284 (2) of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law of Benue State 2019.

When the case came up for mention, no plea was taken for want of jurisdiction.

The presiding Magistrate, Mrs Dooshima Ikpambese remanded the accused at the Correctional Centre, Makurdi, and adjourned the case to April 28 for further mention.
