Police arraign two for allegedly assaulting neighbor
Ekiti State police, on Wednesday arraigned two men, Adewole Jayeola (34) and Ibrahim Sanusi (21) in Ado Ekiti for allegedly assaulting a neighbour, Owoeye Ayonitemi.
The defendants, whose addresses were not provided, are being tried for assault.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Olubu Apata, told the court that the defendants allegedly committed the offence on February 28 about 8:00 p.m. in Ayisola Sawmill area of Odo Ado in Ado-Ekiti.
Apata alleged that the defendants assaulted one Owoeye Ayonitemi by beating him with several blows until he was saved by neighbours.
He said the defendants, who reside in the same neighbourhood with complainant, pounced on Ayonitemi after they accused him of stealing money and a motorcycle.
The offence, according to him, contravened Section 351 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them.
The Prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him present his witnesses.
Counsel to Jayeola, Mr. Sunday Ochai, and Mr. Gbenga Ariyibi, counsel to Sanusi urged the court to grant their client bail in most liberal terms. They promised that they would not jump bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Kehinde Awosika, granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N50,000 with one surety each in like sum.
She adjourned the case until March 28 for hearing.
