AFCON 2021: Eguavoen identifies major areas Super Eagles can improve on

Former Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen has identified one major area the Nigeria national team needs to improve after their elimination from the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Cameroon.

Nigeria was knocked out from the 2021 AFCON against Tunisia in the Round of 16 on Sunday.

Youssef Msakni scored the only goal of the match to ensure Tunisia defeated Nigeria 1-0 and qualified for the AFCON quarter-finals.

Asked why the fullbacks [Zaidu Sanusi and Ola Aina] were not given the freedom to go forward before Nigeria conceded a goal against Tunisia, Eguavoen, who stepped down from his role after the match, said at the post-match press conference after the game: “We asked Moses to try to drift in and then we can allow Zaidu to come from the side because as at that point in time you talk about being predictable, yes, but again this is a knockout stage and everybody’s trying to play safe as well.

“The Tunisians were just playing for time as far as I am concerned and then see if they can get something out and at the beginning of the second half they got it and they all went back.

“It’s something that we can improve on, now there is no second chance to come back to the AFCON in this game but going forward we will try to improve, that’s why when things happen we take tapes and review.”
