Orile  Agege Hospital champions voluntary blood donation

Voluntary Donation of Blood has been described as the only panacea to addressing the Blood product deficit withnessed across the health facilities in  the country.

This was the submission of the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Orile Agege General Hospital, Dr Sola Pitan at a three-day Blood Donation awareness jointly organised by the facility and the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Services to sensitize the public on the lmportance of Voluntary Blood Donation at the Grassroots.

Dr Pitan explained that due to the high cases of surgeries conducted by health facilities in the state, the demand for Blood products is high, hence the need to encourage Lagosians to embrace voluntary Donation of Blood, every three months.

He explained that despite the massive lnvestment of the Lagos State Government on the establishment of Blood Banks, continuous Voluntary Blood Donation is the only key to ensure adequate and safe Blood products across health facilities.

According to Dr Pitan, voluntary blood donation is safe and healthy for the donor’s wellbeing and it  aids the production of fresh and healthy blood cells.

Contributing, the Executive Secretary, Lagos State Blood Transfusion Services, Dr Bodunrin Oshikomaya explained that regular blood donation will help to detect early warning signs of diseases in the donor’s body that needs urgent attention.

She explained that women lose blood during child delivery, as well as other reproductive health challenges, cancer and sickle cell anemia, which has continuously made the need for blood products high across health centres in the country.

The event was well attended by Community leaders lncluding the lyalola of lle-Epo Market, Alhaja Ranatiu Anifowoshe.
