Fayemi tasks traditional institution on alternative method of solving chieftaincy tussles

The Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi has called on the people of the state to adopt alternative method of solving chieftaincy tussle rather than resorting to endless legal litigations.
He made the plea at the inauguration of the reconstituted State Council of Traditional Rulers 2021/2023 Council Session, and said that all hands must be on deck to discourage royal tussle that often characterized the appointment of traditional rulers in some communities of the State.
Governor Fayemi congratulated the new Chairman of the Council, the Onisan of Isan-Ekiti, Oba Gabriel Adejuwon on his appointment charging him to build on the successes of his predecessor.
Dr Fayemi who commended the roles of the traditional rulers towards the sustainance of peace in the state noted that his government values the cultural heritage of the people.
He also stressed the need to restore the value and sustain the dignity and cherish the traditional institution, adding that the state will henceforth work hard to enforce legislation with respect to the tenure of regency.
“It was normal in the days of our forebears for a vacant stool to be filled within three months without rancour. Nowadays, the exercise can last for years or decades due to legal tussle that might ensue.”
The Governor explained that his view was not borne out of lack of confidence in the judiciary, adding that the acrimony and discord that usually accompany such moves always undermine the peaceful co-existence in the communities.
The Governor regretted that the enforcement of the law limiting regency period to a maximum of two years has not been properly followed, while calling on traditional institution to tolerate one another by exploring Alternative Dispute Resolutions.
“There is the need to restore our value and sustain the dignity of our cherished and revered traditional institution. Henceforth, we will endeavor to enforce legislation with respect to the tenure of regency in the State.”
The Governor lauded the outgoing Chairman of the council of traditional rulers, Oba Ajibade Alabi, the Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti, while calling on other traditional rulers in the state not to shy away in their responsibilities of mediatory, reconciliatory and advisory roles that they have been playing as Royal Fathers in the state for the peace, progress and development of the State.
