Cervical Cancer: Rotary Club administers HPV vaccine to school girls
Rotary Club of Eko Atlantic says it has administered the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine to no fewer than 115 students, aged nine to 13, of the Girls Junior School, Simpson Street, Marina, Lagos.
According to it, this is to prevent cervical cancer.
The club said it is also upgrading the Tinubu Methodist Primary School, Lagos Island and Ogba Primary Health Centre, Lagos State.
The Change Maker Rotary Club’s Lady President, Rtn Mamta Deb Roy; its Secretary, Rtn Kishore Bendre and the Board of Directors of the club spoke with newsmen in Lagos on Friday.
Roy said that the projects would be impactful and sustainable, while the club strives to change lives around it.
” This is in line with the Rotary International theme: ‘Serve to Change Lives’.
“The club has already administered the human papilloma virus vaccine to about 115 students at Girls Junior School, Simpson Street, Marina, Lagos, within the age of nine to 13 years to prevent cervical cancer.
“This vaccine can prevent most cases of cervical cancer if given before a girl or woman is exposed to the virus.
“We have adopted the school. We are set to renovate the classrooms, library, borehole and provide clean drinking water for the students, as well as donate school bags, books and stationeries among others.
“The club is focused on providing medical equipment for the center, thereby making it conducive for maternal and child health.’’
According to her, other projects lined up for the Change Maker Rotary year include plastic segregation, with the focus of recycling plastics and making Lagos plastic free.
This she said would be in collaboration with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).
The president added that the club would engage in tree planting to support the environment in collaboration with Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK).
“We are also conducting free cataract eye surgery camp for over 300 people.
“The club will embark on a Mega Scale, Rotary Family Health Camp, to touch more than 3,000 lives in Badagry.
“We will conduct vocational training to empower youths on a sustainable programme.
“Sensitisation on awareness of mental health, free feeding programme, provide support to cerebral palsy home and setting up of the blood donation camps
“Other projects to be executed include setting up a 10-bed Dialysis Centre in JV with International Rotary Clubs.
“Also, empowering golden agers by teaching them to know the basic usage of technology on a day-to-day life.
“Other programmes include end polio programme, peace and conflict resolution seminars and ‘Project Ominira’ for health and hygiene of girl-child below 18 years,” the Rotary lady president said.
