Ogun flags off distribution of solar power kits to villages

Bankole Taiwo, Abeokuta

Ogun State government on Thursday began the distribution of Solar Energy Kits to light up villages without electricity power supply across the 20 local governments of the state.

The Commissioner for Rural Development, Engr. Oludotun Taiwo stated this while flagging off the project at Atapa Ishaga village in Abeokuta North Local Government Area.

Engr Oludotun, who was represented by the Director Planning, Research and Statistic, Mr. Adekunle Oyesowen, said that the initiative which would be replicated in other rural communities would bring development to the areas.

The commissioner said that the Dapo Abiodun-led government decided to use the solar power to supplement electricity in the local communities because it might take a long time before electricity gets to every village across the state.

According to him the reason for the solar power kits was to take the villagers out of darkness and give them the opportunity to use solar power system especially the bulb for domestic use and charging of their phones without the use of generator.

He said, “As you know that the government cannot get to everywhere and this is one of the ways so that we can make sure that our people get light that is why we are giving this community this supply and we are going to spread it to other local government.

“This solar system can charge their phones, give them light, and this will reduce the carbon gases. We are here to help them install. It is a pilot scheme we want to see how it works before we replicate it in other local governments,” he added.

Oludotun therefore, charged the villagers to make judicious use of the solar power system especially the bulb and avoid being careless in handling the kits.
