Unilorin opens hostels as students begin phased resumption

As the University of Ilorin begins its phased physical resumption of academic activities this Monday (January 25, 2021), the management has announced the reopening of hostels for on-campus students.
According to the four-phased resumption schedule, students with outstanding 1st Semester examinations are expected to resume on January 25, 2021 for the completion of their outstanding examinations. Final year and postgraduate students are expected to come into campus on Monday, February 1, 2021 while 100 level students will resume on February 15, 2021. And on March 1, 2021, all other students are expected to come into campus.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. L.T. Ajibade, in a chat with newsmen last Wednesday (January 20, 2021), said that adequate arrangements have been made to reopen the hostels beginning from Sunday, January 24, 2021 for “hostelites” and assured them of good times.
It would be recalled that the Student Affairs Unit had earlier released guidelines for all hostelites either in the school or private hostels.
The statement, titled “Reopening of Hostels on Campus”, said, “Further to the phased reopening of the University for physical activities, this is to inform students particularly hostelites that hostels have been scheduled to open as follows: January 24, 2021 for those having outstanding examinations and January 31, 2021 for final year and postgraduate students”
The statement further explained that students “in the first phase of reopening will only be allowed into the hostels after providing required details in an online form available on http://bit.ly/unilorin-hostel-capturing”.
It advised the students “to come with minimum of five reusable face masks and avoid crowded environment under any disguise”, adding that “it should be noted that no visitor will be permitted in the hostel while common rooms would remain locked”.
Prof. Ajibade disclosed that the management has released the forms for the concerned students to fill online, adding that the required information include the students’ names, hostels block name, room numbers and their examination numbers to write in order to know the category of the students resuming for their examinations in various hostels.
The Dean said that as at Wednesday (January 20, 2021), the Student Affairs Unit had received over 4,000 forms of the registered students expected to come in for their outstanding examinations.
Prof. Ajibade explained further that the number of the students expected to return to their hostels for the said examinations will not be many because not all the categories of the students have outstanding examinations to write, adding that that is why the students will be resuming in batches in order to guard against any action that could jeopardize the efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19 on campus.
He appealed to the owners and managers of the hostels to be watchful of the students’ movement into their hostels, adding that anyone of them observed to be sick should notify the University management in time and be asked to vacate the hostel and never allow anyone of them to welcome visitors and gather for any meeting at this period.
The Dean stressed further that any student that falls sick should notify the University management and stay at home to receive virtual lectures and if at all such student misses any test, the University will arrange for a make-up test or examination for them.
“Students who have symptom(s) of any ailment are advised to please stay off the campus and make necessary report through their Faculty Sub Deans to the Student Affairs Unit. Those coming in are to ACT RESPONSIBLY for the safety of all,” Prof. Ajibade stressed.
