$87.4m needed to contain monkey pox outbreak – WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that it requires $87.4 million over the next six months to collaborate with countries, partners, and other stakeholders in controlling the ongoing Mpox outbreak.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the WHO outlined that these funds would support the implementation of essential activities detailed in the global Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan (SPRP), which was issued on August 26.

The SPRP serves as a comprehensive guide developed by the WHO to direct the global response to Mpox, focusing on surveillance, research, equitable access to medical countermeasures, and community empowerment.

Following the global emergency declaration on August 14, the WHO emphasized that the $87.4 million is necessary from September 2024 to February 2025 to coordinate efforts, provide technical support, manage operations, and distribute medical supplies.

The WHO is calling on donors to urgently provide the full funding needed to prevent further spread and safeguard those at risk.
