8 NDLEA officers decorated for interception of 60 bags of Ghanaian ‘Loud’

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recently intercepted approximately 60 large bags of Ghanaian Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, totaling 2,400 kg in Lagos.

Retired Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa, the Chairman of NDLEA, announced this development while presenting new ranks and commendation letters to eight officers from the Marine Command of the agency on Thursday in Abuja.

Marwa revealed that he had authorized special promotions for these eight officers due to their courageous and professional conduct during an operation targeting drug traffickers and intercepting boats transporting illicit substances from Ghana to Nigeria via Lagos waterways.

The promoted officers are Dick Aaron Dick, Alabi Mayowa, Gabriel Ubokikwan, Aso Daniel John, Abdul Emmanuel Sule, Ngabolo Victor Sonpano, Jonah Emmanuel Sule, and Membe Gabriel.

Marwa highlighted that such successful operations underscore the progress of NDLEA’s reform efforts. He stated, “Each breakthrough showcases the new NDLEA we are striving to build and reaffirms our belief that we are on the right path. Such events are a point of pride for me.”

In explaining the rationale for the special promotions and commendations, Marwa noted that the officers demonstrated exceptional bravery and commitment under challenging conditions. They thwarted an attempt by a criminal group to smuggle 60 jumbo bags of illegal drugs from a neighboring country. Despite significant obstacles and attempts to hinder their efforts, the officers remained steadfast and successfully completed their mission.

“This recognition is a testament to their valor and aligns with our practice of rewarding dedication, performance, and sacrifice,” Marwa said.

He added that the reward scheme is part of broader reforms implemented over the past three years to enhance officer performance. The reforms include bi-annual Command Awards, commendations, and special promotions for exceptional service.

Marwa detailed that on August 23 at 3 a.m., the Special Marine Squad acted on actionable intelligence and intercepted a boat at Alfa Beach in Lekki, Lagos. Another boat was also spotted. Despite encountering resistance, the officers remained focused, seized the drugs, arrested a Ghanaian suspect, and confiscated the boat equipped with three outboard engines.

Marwa emphasized that this operation was significant for two reasons: firstly, it demonstrated the agency’s success in making traditional trafficking routes through airports and land borders less accessible, leading traffickers to seek alternative routes like waterways. Secondly, it showed that traffickers will face significant challenges on these new routes due to the Marine Command’s presence and capabilities.

He commended the recent enhancements to the Marine Command, including equipment upgrades and training, and praised the UK Home Office International Operations for their support. Marwa affirmed that the NDLEA will continue to collaborate with other security agencies to ensure that drug traffickers find no safe routes in Nigeria, including waterways.

He urged officers to maintain their high standards and integrity in all operations, emphasizing the importance of adhering to established procedures. Marwa concluded, “There is much work ahead and many risks involved. As long as we follow our Standard Operating Procedures and uphold our mandate, we will succeed.”

On behalf of the honorees, Dick Aaron Dick expressed gratitude for the NDLEA’s leadership and reform efforts, stating that the recognition would serve as motivation for continued excellence and inspire other personnel within the agency.
