53rd ICAN Conference: Gov. Soludo charges Accountants on transparency, value-driven profession

The Governor of Anambra state, Prof. Charles Chukuma Soludo has charged accountants to be value-driven in discharging their responsibilities.

He made the disclosure at the as Special Guess at the 53rd Annual Accountants  Conference of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria ( ICAN) held in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said, “Play your roles as professionals in offices and ensure that the limited resources at the disposal of the government are effectively and efficiently utilised to better the lives of the majority of the citizenry in the country.”

The Governor tasked members of the Accountants to uphold to the ethics and values of the profession by displaying integrity and transparency in their practice.

He appealed to accountants not to sabotage the Economy by conniving with public office holders to siphon money.

The Chairman of Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Committee, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele during lecture titled: Rethinking Nigeria’s Economic Management, Revenue Optimisation and  Fiscal Responsibility stressed that the challenges in the system are multiplicity of taxes and revenue agencies, unprofessional means of tax adminstration, low tax morale and taxpayer apathy and largely manual processes.

He suggested that we need to have single Digital tax system, clarity of taxing rights, integration of tax collection functions, harmonisation of revenue Administration and simplify approach to tax compliance.

The Chairman emphasised that administrative intervention, constitution amendment, use of technology, vertical and horizontal coordination will assist in transforming the tax system in the country.
