48 suspected internet fraudsters apprehended In Abia, cars and phones worth hundreds of millions seized

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended 48 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud, commonly referred to as Yahoo Boys, in Abia State, South-East Nigeria.

The EFCC announced on Monday that the arrests took place on Friday in Umudike, within Ikwuano Local Government Area, by operatives from its Uyo Zonal Directorate. The arrests followed credible intelligence indicating the suspects’ involvement in internet fraud.

According to the EFCC, the operation yielded significant recoveries, including 12 luxury vehicles, 15 laptops of various brands, and 68 high-end smartphones.

The EFCC stated, “The Uyo Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has detained 48 individuals suspected of internet fraud in Umudike, Abia State. The arrests, carried out on August 30, 2024, were based on actionable intelligence regarding their alleged fraudulent activities.

“Among the items seized from the suspects are 12 exotic cars, 15 laptops of various brands, and 68 costly smartphones. The suspects will face charges in court once the investigation is complete.”
