44-year-old man docked for alleged shop breaking, theft

A 44-year-old man, Adamu Garuba, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged shop breaking and stealing.

Garuba, whose address was not given, is facing a two-count charge of shop breaking and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp. Caleb Leramo, told the Court that the defendant and others at large committed the offence on March 21, at about 2:00 a.m. at Ekute Quarters in Ado-Ekiti.

Leramo alleged that the defendant and others at large broke into the shop of one Ige Christiana. He alleged that the defendant and others currently at large stole items valued at N109,200 belonging to the complainant.

He gave the items as a plasma TV valued at N30,000; 12kg cyclinder – N25,000; 3kg cylinder – N9,000; three rubbers of garri – N1,200 and Infinix phone valued at N44,000.

According to him, the offences contravened Sections 413(1) and (2) and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

He urged the Court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

Counsel to the defendant, Mr Olawumi Olowolafe, urged the Court to grant his client bail and promised that the defendant would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Saka Afunso, ordered the remand of the defendant at the correctional centre.

He adjourned the case until March 24, for the ruling on the bail application.
