43 Professors kick against new UNIABUJA VC, petition Tinubu
…Demand nullification of appointment
A fierce academic controversy has erupted at the University of Abuja (UniAbuja), with 43 professors petitioning President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the appointment of Prof. Aisha Maikudi as the university’s substantive Vice Chancellor.
The petitioners, senior members of the university’s faculty, claim that the appointment process violated the institution’s regulations, calling for the nullification of Maikudi’s promotion from acting VC to the substantive position.
The professors, in their petition, argue that the selection process was marred by irregularities and a lack of transparency, which they believe undermines the principles of fairness and merit that should guide such a significant decision.
They further contend that the actions of the university’s Governing Council in endorsing Maikudi were contrary to established academic and procedural norms.
“We strongly urge President Tinubu to nullify this appointment and ensure that a transparent and lawful process is followed in selecting the next Vice Chancellor, this decision undermines the integrity of our institution and sets a dangerous precedent for universities across the country,” a source said.
The crisis surrounding the VC appointment has escalated over the past weeks, with earlier protests staged by professors at the Federal Ministry of Education, where they voiced similar concerns.
