27 students from Zamfara seek Govt aid for Law school fees

A group of 27 financially challenged students from Zamfara State have made a heartfelt appeal to their state government for assistance with their registration fees for the upcoming 2023/2024 session at the Nigerian Law School.

The plea was made public through a statement released by Mubasshir Umar and Mahmud Sani-Kaura, the Chairman and Secretary of the Zamfara State Law Students’ Forum, respectively.

In their statement, issued on Friday, the students highlighted the financial barriers they face, noting that over 90 percent of them are unable to meet the high cost of the registration fees on their own.

They emphasised the critical nature of the situation, pointing out that admission into the Nigerian Law School is an annual opportunity, and securing a spot is contingent upon the ability to pay these fees.

The students also referenced a tradition in northern Nigeria where state governments typically support their indigent law students by covering registration costs, as well as mobility and logistics, to enable them to attend the prestigious institution.

With the hope of securing timely support, the students are directing their appeal to the empathy and generosity of the state governor, Dauda Lawal, urging him to intervene promptly and assist them in pursuing their legal education without the burden of financial strain.

“Admission into the law school is once in a year which is secured before the fees are paid, this is our burden.

“Traditionally due to exorbitant school fees of the Nigerian Law School, state governments, especially in the northern Nigeria pay the registration, mobility and logistics for their indigent law students who qualified and admitted into the school.

“We are appealing for urgent intervention of our kind-hearted state governor Dauda Lawal,” it said.

The statement said the call was imperative to enable the students register before the expiration of the deadline.

It also lauded the Governor over the declaration of state of emergency in the education sector in the state.
