26-yr-old kills driver over minor accident in Ogun

Ogun State Police Command on Thursday gave a graphic account of how a 26-year old man, Adeyemi Babatunde of Kemta, Idi Aba, Abeokuta on December 8 allegedly used his Lexus vehicle to run over a 46-year old driver, Obafunsho Ismail, killing him instantly over a minor accident.

And to be sure that the victim died, Babatunde was alleged to have also engaged his car in reverse and run over the deceased again.

This was according to a statement from the Spokesman of the State Police Command, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, made available to journalists in Abeokuta.

Babatunde was said to have been arrested around Kemta, Idi Aba area of Abeokuta on Tuesday, December 20.

Trouble was said to have started on the 8th of December 2022 at about 8p.m, when Adeyemi Babatunde who drove a Lexus jeep with “Olu of Oya” customised number plate, hit the deceased car from the rear and caused damage to the rear light of the said car.

The deceased, Ismail Obafunsho, there and then allegedly came down from his car, and asked the suspect to come down too so that both of them could assess the extent of the damage and find solution to whatever might have happened.

Babatunde was, however, said to have refused to come down from his vehicle and was making effort to run away.

This action was said to have allegedly infuriated the deceased who insisted that the suspect must come down, and he (Ismail) consequently sat on the bonnets of the suspect’s car in order to prevent him from escaping from the scene.

Babatunde reportedly later came down and warned the deceased to get up from the bonnet of his car if he doesn’t want to waste his life.

He was said to have allegedly went back to the car, drove on high speed which made the deceased fell down from the car, and the car ran over him.

Not satisfied, the suspect also allegedly reversed the vehicle and ran over the deceased again to ensure that he actually died.

Babatunde was said to have there and then ran away with the vehicle but was later traced to his father’s house at Kemta, Idi Aba area of Abeokuta where he was arrested by men of State Motor Traffic Divison on the 20th of December 2022, while the vehicle he used to commit the crime was also recovered and taken to the station as well.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the State, CP Lanre Bankole, has ordered that the suspect be transferred to Homicide section of the state Criminal Investigation Departments for further investigation and prosecution.
