The West African Examinations Council has withheld the results of 215,267 candidates from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). This accounts for 11.92% of the 1,805,216 candidates who participated in the exam, which ran from April 30, 2024, to June 24, 2024.
Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of WAEC’s Nigeria Office, explained that the results were withheld due to various reported cases of examination malpractice. He noted that this represents a 4.37% decrease from the 16.29% of withheld results in the 2023 WASSCE for School Candidates.
Dangut emphasized WAEC’s commitment to addressing examination malpractice and criticized the continued use of mobile phones and organized cheating in some schools. Ongoing investigations will be reviewed by the Council’s committee, and decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates through their schools. Candidates can appeal their cases via the WAEC website.
Additionally, Dr. Dangut reported that 73.79% of candidates achieved credit or above in at least five subjects, with or without English Language and/or Mathematics, totaling 1,332,089 candidates. He encouraged candidates to check their results online and apply for their Digital Certificates, which will be available 48 hours later. Results will be accessible on the Council’s website for those who have met their financial obligations, and Result Listings will be sent to schools soon.
The examination was administered across four WAEC member countries: Nigeria, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
