1500 sacked teachers: Osun govt reinstates 23 Special Needs Teachers

By Ismail Azeez, Osogbo

The Osun State Government has approved the reinstatement of 23 Special Needs Teachers who were part of the 1,500 teachers laid off as a result of irregular recruitment.

It would be recalled that the teachers were sacked by Governor Ademola Adeleke-led Peoples Democratic Party through an executive order, stating that their appointments do not follow due process.

The 1,500 primary and secondary teachers who were employed under the immediate past administration of Gboyega Oyetola in Osun State have appealed to the current government to rescind the executive order nullifying their appointments.

Speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr Murtala Jimoh stated this while addressing Secondary Schools Principals at a seminar organized by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Ministry of Education held in Osogbo.

Jimoh said the reabsorbed teachers are to teach in the 10 Special Needs Schools in the state.

He noted that the state government is aware of the shortage of teachers in public schools, asking the sacked teachers to apply afresh.

Jimoh charged all stakeholders in the education sector to work together to stem the tide of drug abuse among students.

He said, “There is a drastic change in the education system in Osun, we are working towards positioning it, may God help us.

“We are going to organise the State 2023 Educational Summit so as to discuss and address the factors affecting the state of education in Osun. Everything that will be discussed at the summit will be looked into critically.

“I want to tell you that those that were employed by the last administration and eased out when this administration took over are going to apply afresh like others and I want to assure you that only those that are qualified as teachers by discipline are the ones that are going to be considered because when we say we are re-training the teachers, it is easier for the government to train those that have been in that line. Only the experts are going to be taken for teaching in Osun.

“I want to assure you that those that are employed are going to be employed both at the primary and secondary levels. They are going to be qualified teachers, we are going to take it seriously.”
