As the world commemorate world’s cancer day, Nigerians have been advised to immediately seek medical attention in hospitals whenever they notice any symptoms of cancer in their bodies as against running to prayer mountain or seeking unorthodox attention through traditional caregivers
The founder, Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN), Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, gave the advise at an occasion to mark this yearly WCD in Ibadan. The theme for the 2017 celebration is: “I can, we can”
Anyanwu-Akeredolu said the WCD is an international day marked every year to raise awareness on all types of cancer and to encourage the prevention and or treatment.
Warning that using unorthodox or traditional caregivers approach such as using herbs, herbalist or evening visiting prayer mountain cannot cure cancer or stop the growth, the wife of the Ondo state governor-elect noted that the best place to visit is the hospital.
She however urge the government, both at the federal and state levels
to help in the effort in search for a wayout to eradicate the scourge
of cancer in the society.
While explaining this year theme “I can, we can”, she encouraged
women to know how to do breast examination exercise by themselves
adding that eating balance diet also goes a long way in preventing
Assuring that BRECAN would not rest on its oasis until cancer is
eradicated and or reduced to the bearest minimal, the BRECAN founder
said the association would henceforth adopt a school for each of its
activities to spread the information that cancer is not a death
“Federal government should make infrastructures and facilities
available so that cancer can be treated for free”, she said
In his presentation, a medical expert, Dr. Kingsley Udoh, explained
the cause of cancer to include: lack of exercise, abstinence from sex,
smoking cigarette, eating less and not taking enough fruits
Kingsley defined cancer as an abnormal and uncontrollable growth in
the body which is deadly but that the disease cannot be transmitted
from one to another
“Vegetables food are very good at preventing cancer. Eating enough
vegetable makes even cancer patients live longer “, he said
In her welcome address, Proprietor, Seed of Life College, Mrs.
Kikelomo Runsewe said cancer is not a death sentence as some people
often perceive it
Runsewe urged people to interface with doctors early enough noting
that “early detection is the most important and necessary key to
cancer treatment and management”
