D’Tigress small forward, Cecilia Okoye has said she is excited about her move back to Spain to play in the second division of the Spanish Women Basketball League with Universidad de Oviedo.
Okoye, who clinched the deal after her splendid performance for First Bank Basketball Club at the FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women (ACCW) in Angola last month, stated that she was happy to return to Spain after an unpleasant experience with Celta Vigo last season.
“I am happy to be back in Spain to play for Universidad de Oviedo. This is a new challenge and I am ready to take it with both hands. The deal has been on before the ACCW and I am happy to have finalised it as soon as the ACCW ended,” she added.
Okoyo, whose heroics was instrumental to First Bank finishing third at the ACCW with 24 points in the third place win over defending champions, Inter Club, said she is also excited about playing at the number three position with her new team, which will help become adept in the position and help her team gain promotion to the elite division.
“My desire is to help my team gain promotion at the end of the play offs. It is a big task, but it is accomplishable. I hope to give my best to the club and focus on gaining promotion to the first division,” Okoye added.
Last season, Okoye played at Real Club Celta Zorka Vigo (LFB) where in 25 games she recorded 13.9ppg, 6.3rpg, 1.3spg and 1.1bpg.
Okoye, who attended the McNeese State College, was in the Southland Conference Tournament Semifinals for two years in a row (2013 and 2014). She was also voted All-Southland Conference Second Team back in 2014 at her college.
Okoye was called to Nigerian Senior National Team this year, winning the Afrobasket in Mali. She has played previously as a professional in Poland (Widzew) and Slovenia (Grosbasket) and it will be her fourth season as a professional player.
