An expert has described the decision by President Donald Trump to pull United States out of the Paris Climate Agreement as an imminent danger to the world.
The environmental expert, Dr. Olanipekun Coker in a chat with Nigerian NewsDirect said by the decision US set a bad precedent to other countries looking forward to its leadership on promoting plans and actions aimed at having a safer environment.
“The plan to generate more jobs for Americans by pulling out of the accord will further expose our planet to dangerous chemicals coming from a country that has perhaps the highest number of industries in the world with billions of tonnages of harmful chemicals coming from their production factories.” He said.
He said the theme of this year’s world environment eventý: ‘Connecting People to Nature’, would not have come at a better time considering the exigencies of the moment, especially the myriad of social, economic and environmental challenges confronting the country.
Baring his mind on the implications of US pulling out of the Paris Agreement which was signed by more than 190 countries after painful deliberations that took years before it was signed in November 2015, Coker said the US cannot cow the entire world.
According to Coker, “There is no doubt that the US decision to unilaterally pull out from the agreement will cause some little setback, but if you are following the trend of event since yesterday when this declaration was made, almost all the major players from the big economy from the EU like Germany, France, Italy made a joint statement condemning the act and promising to fill the gap that may probably be left.”
