Rivers Assembly elects principal officers

The Rivers State House of Assembly (RSHA) has elected new officers to pilot the affairs of the 9th Assembly for the next four years.

Those elected are Hon Martins Amaehwule, representing Obio/Akpor Constituency 1 as Majority Leader, Hon Barine Deeya, Khana Constituency as Deputy Majority Leader, Hon Evans Bipi, Ogu/Bolo Constituency as Chief Whip and Hon Major Jack, Asari-Toru Constituency as Deputy Chief Whip.

Rt Hon Owaji Ibani of Andoni Constituency had earlier been unanimously voted as Speaker of the 9th Assembly, while Hon Edison Ehie of Ahoada East Constituency was elected  Deputy Speaker.

Addressing the newly elected House Officers during plenary Friday, the Speaker charged them to make the welfare of members a priority. “Congratulating the newly elected principal officers of the 9th Assembly. I urge you to take the welfare of the members seriously. You must work cooperatively with the Speaker and Deputy Speaker to move the State forward. You must do justice to all manner of people in the discharge of your duties as principal officers of the House,”the Speaker said.

Meanwhile some of the lawmakers have started rolling out their blueprints for the legislative task ahead.

First was the lawmaker representing Obio/Akpor 2 Constituency at the Rivers State House of Assembly, Michael Chinda who told journalists shortly after their first sitting that he will deviate from the traditional norm to sponsor bills that will create jobs for the teeming unemployed Rivers youths.

“I may not follow the normal route this time around. I will think outside the box,with a view to creating jobs for our people,”Chinda said.

On insecurity challenge facing the State, the lawmaker said there are enough laws to tame insecurity, so law enforcement agencies should do their job.

Chinda expressed happiness that his bill on the Rivers State College of Science and Technology in the 8th Assembly has been assented to by the governor.

Also speaking,the lawmaker representing Ahoada West Constituency, Nwanaka Okpobiri said he would nominate projects that have direct bearing on his constituents.

“I will nominate projects to address the basic needs of my people. I will also initiate bills that have direct bearing on my people in Ahoada West,” Okpobiri emphasized.
