PIB passes second reading at House of Reps

The Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) which seeks to boost the oil industry in Nigeria has scaled through second reading at the House of Representatives.

The bill which cover governance, protection of host communities, and the regulatory framework of the oil Industry, will solve the issues that have undermined its growth.

The bills enjoyed favourable reactions from members; there was a moment of trial when the Minority leader, Hon. Leo Ogor raised a point of order on the composition of the bill.

This observation received further accolades from another Delta lawmaker before the Speaker, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, intervened and explained the rationale for the separation of the Bills.

The journey for the Petroleum Industry Bill, has not been a smooth one in the House of Representatives, as it had suffered some turbulent trips through the sixth and seventh Assembly.

This time, the lawmakers’ debates on the general principles of the bills revealed a consensus of opinion on its merit

The Petroleum Industry Bill had gone through the sixth and seventh assemblies, but was never passed into law.

After scaling through the second reading, the House referred the Bill to an Adhoc committee on PIB for further legislative action.
