Oyo Assembly to get rid of destitutes and beggars in the state

The 9th Oyo state House of Assembly has taken a strong ground to fight against the increasing presence of destitutes  and beggars in major areas in Ibadan, as well as other important major places in the state

The house has directed the Oyo state Min of Women Affairs Community Development, Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation to put measures in place to urgently evacuate destitutes from the vicinity of the Mokola Flyover, Sabo ,Jemibewon in Ibadan and other such places in the state.

This followed deliberations  on a motion sponsored by Hon Olawumi Oladeji (Ogbomoso North) on the urgent need to extend the road divider leading to Mokola flyover to prevent accident and also evacuate destitutes and beggars from the vicinity.

The House also resolved that the various rehabilitation centers in Oyo state be made functional to effectively rehabilitate a number of destitutes and beggars to rid the state if these special set of people.

The speaker ,Oyo state House of assembly, Hon Adebo Ogundoyin added that evacuating destitutes and beggars from major streets and areas in the state will help in enhancing the aesthetic value of the pacesetter state, and will ultimately attract investors to the state.

Hon Ogundoyin who assured that the 9th Assembly will formulate laws that will promote a neat and beautiful environment which will make the state rank among the best in the country ,added that efforts must be intensified in taking the said people off our streets.

Earlier, while seconding the motion, the Deputy Chief Whip of the House ,Hob Yusuf Adebo (In South West 1) said Ibadanland was fast becoming a dumping ground for destitutes, stressing that most of these people were brought from other states to Ibadan.

Other lawmakers who spoke on the motion said some of these people are not real destitutes as many of them are criminals who had been caught with human parts and other incriminating items hence they must be evacuated.

They particularly urged the Oyo state Government to take a cue from Lagos state which regularly evacuates destitutes from its major streets.

Besides,the plenary equally charged the Oyo state Min of Works and Transport to extend the divider leading to Mokola Flyover in Ibadan to prevent motorists and motorcyclists from crossing obstructing other moving vehicles.

It also called on the Oyo state Traffic Management Authority to ensure the enforcement of traffic rules on Mokola flyover Ibadan
