The Governor of Ogun state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has revealed that the state will support as many National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Corp members.
Amosun stated this during the closing orientation for the 2017 Batch ‘B’ Stream 2 Corps Members held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, recently.
The Governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Youths and sports, Ogun State, Mr. Afolabi Afuape, said, “Education should be functional, people should go to school to be able to function independently and create wealth for themselves and others.
“You must make good use of the NYSC scheme to develop specialised vocational skills to supplement the few available white-collar jobs. You must ensure you keep yourselves busy always for your own good. The reality of global unemployment indicates that not every graduate can have access to white-collar jobs, this prompts the need to be innovative.
“We know that it is not enough to learn a skill without an avenue to discharge knowledge so we will support as many as we can where funds are available.”
The Commissioner acknowledged the fact that the opportunities for enterprise and access to loans are limited, therefore he urged the youths to challenge themselves through innovation and setting targets, noting that “Ogun State is ready to provide funding for those who are enterprising enough and those who qualify on merit”.
He urged the Corp members to be worthy ambassadors and project the country’s image positively. He also commended them for their perseverance throughout the period of training.
However, he advised the young graduates to begin to concentrate on exploring their potentials and putting their talents to good use. Also, he reminded the corp members of the aims and objectives of the NYSC scheme and advised that they foster and promote unity in diversity wherever they are posted.
He added, “I encourage you to put in more dedication and selflessness into serving your fatherland; as stated in a line of the NYSC anthem. Just as many of your predecessors have proven themselves worthy of praise in their various places of assignments in time past, you have a noble heritage to uphold.
“Be rest assured that the people of Ogun State are very hospitable and caring. You must ensure that you identify with the people of your host community, support their hopes and aspirations and your entire service year will surely be worthwhile and memorable.” The commis-sioner also used the avenue to appeal to the Federal Government to reinstate the National Sports Festival which has been suspended since 2012.
