New Police Commissioner assumes duty in Rivers


…Vows to fight crime headlong

A new Commissioner of Police(CP), Mr Usmam Belel has assumed duties in Rivers State. He took over from Mr Zaki Ahmed who is said to have proceeded to a year course in Kuru, Jos., Plateau State.

In his maiden press briefing Friday in Port Harcourt, the CP vowed to make Rivers State inhabitable for criminal elements, while calling for the support and cooperation of everybody. Belel specially appealed to the media to support his administration, which he said will be open door- oriented. “We shall fight all criminal elements in the State to a standstill. Rivers State will not be habitable for them anymore. I promise to declare a total war against violent crimes,” the CP said.

According to Belel, his strategy will be planked on intelligence and visibility policing. He promised to strengthen the tactical units of the Command to ensure that all undetected crimes are investigated, with the culprits brought to book. This he said will bring relief to the families of the victims.

The Police boss promised to be professional and apolitical in the discharge of his duties, pointing out that under his leadership, no citizen will be unlawfully detained.

The CP also declared that his leadership will have zero tolerance  for corruption, while fundamental human rights of people shall be respected.

“Every complaint of corrupt practices shall be investigated and persons found culpable shall be sanctioned. The Provost Unit and X-Squad in the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (SCIID) shall be reinvigorated to be better able to perform their oversight of personnel conducts, to be complemented by the IGP’s X-Squad Monitoring Teams,” Belel explained.

The new CP also promised to collaborate with other sister security agencies in its bid to combat crime. He called for government’s assistance in the area of provision of logistics
