Ministers’ inauguration: Airlines record high patronage, increase fare

By Ayo Fadimu

Ahead of Wednesday’ s inauguration of Ministers by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja, all domestic commercial  airlines in the country recorded high patronage on Abuja bound flights.

At the Muritala Muhammed Airport domestic wing, all the seats of airlines, including business class were totally booked.

By noon on Tuesday when our Correspondents, who were also heading for Abuja reached the airport, almost all the flights before 6 pm had been totally.

Only three airlines, Dana Air, Arik and Air Peace still had seats for passengers in the evening.

However, our Correspondent observed that the price of the tickets had skyrocketed. By noon, Dana Air was already selling its Abuja bound air ticket for 50,000 on economy class. Both Air Peace and Arik AIT that were leaving an hour later sold tickets for N46,000 while Arik Air, 7 o’clock flight was sold for little less than N44,000.

A check at Arik showed that as at 3pm on Tuesday, all Abuja bound flights on the airlines between 6am and 10am were already been sold at N46,000.

‘I doubt if anyone who does not purchase ticket today can get seat for 6am and 7am tomorrow “ a staff of Arik Air told our correspondents.

‘You can see that the rates are double. We follow the law of demand and supply here. Majority of the people are travelling because of the Minister’s inauguration, we can’t just meet the demand’ he said.

In the meantime, fares of  Abuja outbound flights are expected to increase between Wednesday evening and Friday.

“That is when most of the people who travelled to Abuja would return” A source who does not want his name in print told out correspondents
