The Governors of the South-West geo-political zone and the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu, on Thursday have reached a resolution on the structural operations of the Amotekun security network, agreeing it will operate as a community policing network.

The Governors and the IGP reached the resolution on the occasion of a “Security Meeting on Community Policing”, an event held in Lagos State House, Ikeja, which attracted a closed door meeting involving the South-West Governors and the IGP.  Briefing State House Correspondents after the close door meeting, the Chairman of the South-West Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu, disclosed that the Governors and the Police resolved that “Operation Amotekun” will run as a community policing strategy at the local level on the platform of each State.

He reiterated that as against wide cry and fear that the security network is a regional Police, Amotekun is a community policing model.

He said: “We are coming out smiling because we have had very useful discussion. It’s clear now to all of us that the Community Policing which the Nigeria Police is anchoring on that will benefit all of us from our units, to our words and Local Governments and in every State.

“We have chosen that we will embrace community policing in all its entirety. In addition we have spoken and we have made things clear to everybody and we want everyone to know now that when we said we are having Amotekun, it is not that we are creating a regional Police. Amotekun is not regional Police.

“Amotekun is State based because we don’t have region in the Country anyway; we only have States. Just as we have explained to ourselves, all of us have agreed that when you have laws in your respective States backing any Security outfit ‘Amotekun’, then you can go ahead for as long as it is within the legal bounds.

“So, that is why I say to you that we are happy. All of us have agreed on a wonderful resolution of few areas that are dark which we have put light on. I can assure you  that we are on the same page on this two issues and of others.”

Remarking, the IGP stated that the meeting which is the second, was scheduled to discuss the details of the Security outfit in order to fine tune it.

He reiterated that Amotekun is not a regional Police but an outfit that will be operated based on community policing strategy.

He stressed that policing is the function of all which demands that all hands to be on board.

“This is the second meeting we have held with the Governors of the South-western geopolitical zone concerning the operation that was created, ‘Amotekun’. The second meeting is really to discuss the details and fine tuning the Amotekun outfit.

“Amotekun is not a regional security outfit. As it is existing now, every State has one form of outfit, whether it is Vigilante or Neighborhood Watch, that are working with the Security Agencies to fight crime and it (Amotekun) is not different from what is existing.

“So every State is having its structure and it is agreed that this structure creating the community Policing strategy is infused into it, so that policing community will be the initiative of the public. We consider the public as the police and the police as the public. So very body must be on board,” Adamu said.

While Akeredolu and the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu were present at the meeting, Governors of other South-West States were represented by their deputies respectively.
