The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has fixed February 20, for the re-run polls of the Imo North (Okigwe), Senatorial Zone, Imo State.
Disclosing this on Wednesday in the premises of the INEC in Owerri, after a meeting with the candidates of the affected re-run polls, political parties leaders/stakeholders, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), of Imo State, Dr. Gabriel Ada, noted that the elections were prompted by the Court of Appeal’s nullification of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Chief Athan Achonu, on December 11, 2015, based on the petition filed by the Accord Party candidate, Mrs. Rita Ibemere, that there was no Accord Party logo when the poll was held last year. He said the decision was in consonance to the order of the court that they should be held within 90 days of the judgments.
Ada said the polls would also be held in Isiala Mbano and Oru East constituencies, while supplementary elections would take place in 11 out of over 100 polling units in Owerri West constituency, where results were invalidated by the Appeal Court.
The REC said the card readers would be used, with adequate man power in an unbiased manner, stressing that security personnel would be deployed in the affected areas. He urged the legible voters to come out and exercise their franchise orderly.
His words: “The re-run elections will be conducted in an unbiased manner. I appeal to them to make sure there is no violence, they should encourage voters to come out and participate in the process.”
