Imo Govt  arrests 19 illegal revenue collectors

Imo State government has arrested 19 peopl allegedly involved inillegal revenue collection in Owerri for violating the governor’s directive suspending collection of tolls , tickets, taxes from commercial buses, taxies, and lorries all over the State.

The suspected illegal revenue collectors were arrested across different locations in the state on Friday by the enforcement unit of Imo Internal Revenue Service, IIRS  comprising of Civil Defence ,conventional police and other security operatives under the leadership of Nze Charles Onwunali ,Executive Chairman of IiRS .

Fielding questions from journalists shortly after the suspects were paraded in Owerri, Barr. Kissinger Ikeokwu ,Corporate Secretary of the Imo State Internal Revenue Service  IiRS said the suspected illegal revenue collectors were arrested across different locations in the state by the team of task force on collection of illegal tolls and  would be charged to court on Monday.

Ikeokwu. said government would ensure that justice was done to serve as deterrent to erring citizens

He said raising from  the Imo State Executive Council meeting held on the 6th of November, 2019,where reports of incessant harassment of commercial vehicle operators by  hoodlums and illegal revenue collectors disguising as agents of Imo State Government or Imo State Internal Revenue Service agents were raised and following a motion by the Imo State Internal Revenue Executive Chairman,Nze Onwunali the Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha ordered the immediate suspension of Collection of daily tolls, tickets and taxes from all commercial road users, taxis, Buses, Lorries all over Imo State.

Ikeokwu said the ban will continue until there is a harmonisation and unification on road taxes and elimination of duplicity in revenue collections to expose the illegal extortionists embarrassing the good image of government.

The Secretary further said general public and security agencies are hereby directed to arrest anyone collecting or purported to be extorting motorists under the guise of government revenue collectors.”

His words,” We implore the public to shun any act that goes against the rebuild Imo administration vision of our governor as the government would not hesitate to lawfully deal with any defaulter,”

The Secretary said that the government under the watch of Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha was committed to delivering democratic dividends to the people.
