…Says panels neither to probe nor witch-hunt anybody
Gov. Emeka Ihedioha of Imo has inaugurated visitation panels for the three state owned tertiary institutions ,Imo State University, IMSU, the Imo State University Teaching Hospital, IMSUTH, Orlu and the Imo State Polytechnics Umuagwo.
Performing the inauguration exercise yesterday at the Government House Owerri ,the governor said the appointment was in line with his administration’s resolve to sanitise and reposition tertiary education in the state for greater efficiency.
Ihedioha’s who also seized the platform to inaugurate Imo State Hospital Management Board said the panel are to conduct internal audits aimed at ascertaining the financial status of the two institutions from 2012, including Internally Generated Revenue, the university micro finance bank and come up with a comprehensive report.
He said the constitution of the panels were neither to probe nor witch-hunt anybody but a necessity to enhance the quality of education and health care delivery as well as ensure overall growth and development of the state.
Gov Ihedioha further said the panels would also ascertain the welfare of students and investigate allegations of sexual abuse, extortion, issues bordering on allocation of hostels, sub-standard books, handouts, Students Union Government election and illegal payments.
According to him,” They were mandated to capture other issues not listed on the terms of reference and forward their report to the Visitor not later than one month after assumption of duty.”
“The panels were also saddled with the responsibility of investigating award of contracts in the university and ascertain if due process was adhered to, in line with the Procurement Act 2017”
He said, “at the inception of this administration, we were inundated with plethora of complaints on education sector in the state, especially at the tertiary level. And as a responsive government, we felt that we would be abdicating our obligation to the people, if we do not look into these complaints.
On the Hospitals Management Board, the governor said, “the health sector was not spared the pervasive rot, hence the need to constitute the board to carry out intended reforms, with a view to ensuring peak performance at the various state owned health institutions”.
Prof. Chinedu Nebo, former Minister for Power and Energy who spoke on behalf of the visitation panel assured of their commitment to proffer lasting solution towards smooth administration of the institution.
Prof. Nebo, a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria and former Minister for Power and Energy further disclosed that Governor Ihedioha is on the right track towards fixing the various critical institutions of the state.
He appreciated the governor for the confidence reposed on them gave assurance that they would discharge their duties accordingly and ensure that IMSU and other institutions in the state is repositioned.
Among those inaugurated were Prof. Chinedu Nebo, former Minister of Power heading the IMSU visitation panel,others includes Prof. I.K Ogbonnaya, Prof. Basil Nwosu, Prof.Florence Nduka, Prof. N.F Ukaigwe and Prof. Dominic Chima, as members.
Other members were Dr. Chilaka Nwankwo, Mr. Chuck Chukwemeka, Dr. Chineze Obi and Mr. A.C. Duru, as Secretary.
The IMSUTH panel headed by Prof. Frank Akpuaka, with Prof. Theodore Okeahialam, Prof. Peter Akah and Lady Stella Achunine, was also inaugurated.
Others includes Dr. Meg Opara, Dr. Emeka Iroegbu, Mr. Basil Ngobiri, Dr. Kenneth Iregbu, Mr. Ekene Bob-Ekechukwu and Mr. Leo Chimezie.
