IDP camp: Man jailed 14 years for raping teenage girl


A High Court in Maiduguri, the Borno State, has sentenced one Yahaya Umar, a resident of Railway Quarters to 14 years imprisonment with hard labour, for raping one Hajja Ibrahim, from IDP camp at Abbaganaram area of the state.

Justice Alkali Wakkil Gana, in his judgment on Wednesday, said  Ibrahim, followed him to where he forceful had sexually intercourse with her, and therefore committed offence punishable under Section 283 of Penal code of Laws of Borno state.

The offence was committed on 21st September 2016 at about 1900 hours at Railway Quarters Maiduguri.

Justice Wakkil opined that Umar does not deserve any sympathy knowing the conditions the Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs), are going through, only the devil can commit such atrocity

He expressed worried that, based on the witnesses testimonies on oath, it is discovered that, Rainbow Hotel in Maiduguri is often times used by rapist, mostly on IDPs.

He therefore urged the parents to avoid condoning or compromising their children who are abused.

Meanwhile, the defence Counsel, Barrister Ibrahim Tijani Monguno while reacting to the judgment before newsmen said, they may likely appeal against the judgment after going through the judgment because his client still has right to appeal.
