Fuel Price Hike: NLC strike paralyses Jos

The ongoing industrial action called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), as a result of the hike in petroleum pump price, has had a great setback for the Provost of the Federal School of Health Laboratory Medical Sciences Jos, Dr Sunday Etukudoh and four others whose case was slated for yesterday by Mr.Justice Yakubu Dakwak of the Plateau State High Court on whether or not to grant the accused persons bail as canvassed and counter argued by both counsels.

Justice Dakwak had on May 16, reserved ruling on the bail application for the three principal accused yesterday. Dakwak had ordered the accused persons to be remanded in prison custody till yesterday when he would rule on the bail application, which fortunately or unfortunately coincided with the nationwide NLC strike.

They are facing charges of embezzlement, corruption and conspiracy brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The amount involved is about N17 million.

Meanwhile, giving an update of the ongoing strike yesterday, Plateau State chairman of NLC, Mr.Jibrin Bancir, told The Guardian “the strike is still going on. We are still on. We have recorded more compliance. We are making progress. Now, yesterday the state secretariat, the engine room of Plateau State Government complied immediately but the Federal Secretariat did not comply before. Now they (Federal Secretariat) have totally complied. We are making progress.”

Although all the magistrates, customary courts and the state high courts in Plateau did not sit yesterday, the Court of Appeal remained intact as they opened and sat on cases yesterday as expected. Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Jos Chapter, Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi and all other public institutions and schools have all joined the strike in the state. The Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) that has been on strike for months before now is now consumed by the nationwide strike, as the strike is total.
