A female student of Bayero University Kano (BUK) had sustained an injury in the neck region by an unknown assailant who attacked her at her hostel block as she returned from a night study session in the campus.

It was learnt that the attacker waylaid the victim around 3:00am and stabbed her with a sharp object before snatching her mobile phone and running away.

Newsmen gathered that the victim’s scream attracted the attention of other students who rushed to see what was happening and met her bleeding from the injury inflicted on her.

A student who asked not to be named said the victim was in pains at the time of the attack and had to be taken to the varsity’s clinic where she was receiving treatment.

The situation was said to have raised tension among many students who threatened to spark a protest over obvious security lapses which caused the attack.

“We wanted to start a protest because it is not acceptable for the university management to joke with our security. And the worst part of the situation is that it was a female hostel that was targeted,” another student who only gave one of his names Haris told our reporter.

However, Dr. Shamsudeen Umar, the dean of students’ affairs, who confirmed the incident said the victim was receiving treatment and appealed for calm.

He also said the management has launched a probe into the incident while taking steps to enhance security in the university by mounting taller perimeter fences at all the female hostels.
