The Education Rights Campaign,(ERC) Osun State Chapter, has condemned the recent invasion and brutality of students and staff of Osun State University, Ipetu-Ijesha campus by men of the Nigerian Air Force, from the Air Force Safety school situated in the community.
Newsmen recalls that the military men invaded the campus as a follow-up action to harass a student , in the course of the former giving a cover up to an internet fraudster.
ERC in a statement jointly signed by the State Coordinator, Comrade Omole Ibikun, and Secretary, Adaramoye Michael rued the action of the air men and called for immediate probe to get to the root of the crisis, and make the culprits to face the wrath of the law accordingly.
“We wish to first condemn these military men who used the country’s resources to cause insecurity on that campus and put the lives of the students and their lecturers in danger, and by extension created a state of confusion in that sleepy community.
“We demand a democratic probe panel comprising the representatives of the workers’ unions of the institution, the students, and Ipetu-Ijesha community, in which culprits must be made to face the full wrath of law.
“We also demand immediate payment of medical bills and compensation for all affected students and staff.
” We wish to state clearly that the conventional rule that every Nigerian tertiary institution should remain a no-go area to men of the armed forces, as educational environment remains sacrosanct.
“Worse still, it is wrong for men of NAF to take laws into their hands, as the internal security and prevention of local crimes is not within the purview of the air force or the military for that matter.
” Also, the consistent commercialization of the internet scam offence by officials of the Special Anti-robbery Squard(SARS) is not only embarrassing but clearly criminal, this extreme corruption which has made internet fraud to become a social cankerworm is condemnable.
“It is disheartening to hear that it has become a trend in Osun State for members of the SARS to stop anyone that fits the profile of a young fashionable male, and start searching through their laptops and phones without any warrant, accuse them of being internet fraudsters, extort them of whatever money they have on them, and then move on to their next victim.
“While we are opposed to internet fraud and scam as they tend to resolve social/collective economic problem through individualism, albeit a criminal one at that, we strongly believe that poverty, growing wealth disparity, unemployment, high cost of living and mass illiteracy are the reasons behind the continued existence of internet fraud in the country.
“We believe the solution to this crisis should go beyond just punishing the perpetrators of the brutalization, but should be about solving all of these underlying factors that brought about the brutalization in the first instance.
“We also demand proper funding of UNIOSUN with a view to providing adequate infrastructures including hostel facilities on campus for students,” the statement reads.
