The All Progressives Congress (APC) governors of Ogun and Imo States, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and Rochas Okorocha respectively risk being sanctioned by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party if they engage in anti-party activities that can cause loss for the party and candidates presented by the party in the forthcoming election. The anointed candidates of the two governors failed to clinch the party’s ticket in the primary election. While the National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole insisted that the candidates of the two governors lost the election, the duo maintained their candidates won the primary election but were rigged out with the collusion of Oshiomhole. Amosun claimed Ogun APC primary election result was executed by the Cabal in Lagos State.
A source in APC who pleaded anonymity told Nigerian NewsDirect that the party is closely monitoring the activities of the two governors so that they won’t jeopardize the chances of the party at the poll. According to him, the two governors control the State Executives of the party in their respective states and it will be difficult to work with compromised executives in an election. “If the governors decide to move their supporters and candidates to another political party, then it will be unwise for the party to relate with executives whose loyalty to the party is in great doubt,” he noted.
Although, Nigerian NewsDirect could not get the exact sanction to be meted out, a top source within the party said the party may dissolve the State Working Committee of the party in the two states if the anointed candidates of the party defected to another party with the support of the governors. A member of House of Representatives representing Yewa South/ Ipokia federal constituency, Hon Adekunle Abdulkadir Akinlade popularly known as Triple “A” is the anointed candidate of Amosun while Uche Nwosu, son-in-law of Governor Okorocha of Imo State is his candidate. Yesterday, (Sunday evening), Amosun was in the Aso Rock villa in company of Ondo state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu and Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari over the issue.
Amosun and the famous Abuja boys of the Southwest were instrumental to the emergence of the two governors despite opposition by the National leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Although, the outcome of the meeting has not been disclosed before the press time, a source at the presidency informed Nigerian NewsDirect that the President appealed to Amosun to abide by the position of the party.
However, few hours before he met the President, the information commissioner of Ogun State, Dayo Adeneye in a statement had insisted that Akinlade would contest the governorship election next year and win. Although, he didn’t mention under which political party he would contest “by the Grace of God and the support of the good people of Ogun State, Hon. Adekunle Abdulkadir Akinlade will be sworn in as the new governor of Ogun State on May 29, 2019”, Adeneye said.
The statement also read, “On a general note, Oshiomhole, who became the APC Chairman barely three months ago, is already threatening to write the epitaph of the party in his 100 days of ignominy. Governor Amosun concludes the statement with an advice for Oshiomhole:”To Oshiomhole and his motley crew of co-travellers in ignominy, be assured that the music has just begun and we hope that you will enjoy the macabre dance to the music of justice”.
On his part, Nwosu insisted he won the primary election fair and square. He wondered why Oshiomhole whose son is a member of Edo State House of Assembly could scuttle his ambition simply because of his relationship with Okorocha “We are disappointed over Oshiomhole’s action, his statements and antics did not give hope to young people who hitherto had always looked up to him. After all Oshiomhole’s son is a member of the Edo State House of Assembly, who he nominated and he is the Chairman of the party and he is saying that Okorocha’s Senatorial ambition scuttled my governorship.” Nwosu said. However in a chat with Nigerian NewsDirect, the National Publicity Secretary of APC, Mr Lanre Issa-Onilu insisted that the two governors are loyal to the party and it would be unfair to start doubting their commitment to APC. “The two governors are leaders of our party and we would be unfair to them to start doubting their commitment to APC” Issa-Onilu said.
