The  universities were ranked in relation to the following items considered essential in modern library. These include land size, research staff, electronic journals, sitting capacity of library and laptops among others.

Our investigation found Covenant University  worthy as one of the few institutions that invested huge resources  in the establishment and sustenance of  modern library situated on land size of 11,300m/2, capacity of 3,000 readers, 500 researching staff, access to 40,000 electronic journals and 40 state-of-the-art laptops among others. This selection   shows that the university has been very consistent  with updating each department of the  library with latest books needed by students, lecturers and researchers for innovation, knowledge acquisition, brilliant competitions, fun activities and events happening globally.

This ranking in commemoration of World  Book Day  became necessary following  several studies conducted by private and public sector agencies on the importance of library in promotion of excellence and qualitative education in tertiary  institutions.

This is beside perceived poor reading culture in Nigeria and other African countries.

To improve reading culture, investment in modern library was identified as a necessity from the foundation class to university level. Also experts consulted in the process of conducting the research blamed poor investment and mismanagement of budget on modern library as a factor for consistent decline in qualitative education.

However, the research provided opportunity  to showcase achievements of few  outstanding universities  consistent with huge investment in sustenance and upgrading of their libraries to meet up with the global standard , boost research, development, knowledge  of students, academics and non-academics staff . This feat has contributed to high level of graduates from these few outstanding universities.

In reaction to the selection, the Vice Chancellor, Covenant University, Prof A. A. Atayero said that academic institutions are established to among other things, promote learning through reading.  According to him,” as an institution, we have an established centre for learning resources. The library in Covenant University is known as “Centre for Learning Resources (CLR).” The Centre operates a functional virtual library service, which enables staff and students, access to the Web Public Access Catalogue (WebPAC), and other electronic resources from wherever there is a web browser anywhere in the globe and anytime. “The library complex is able to accommodate up to 3,000 readers and about 500 researching staff and postgraduate students. Apart from providing relevant library resources, reading lists are recommended to students by lecturers, who further require their students to write term papers, which constitute part of students’ continuous assessment. All these help to inculcate reading culture among our students.”
