The Chairman, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Benue Chapter, Mr Emmanuel Agbakor has called on the international community to rescue Benue people from the hands of the herdsmen who were killing, raping, maiming and destroying their properties.
Agbakor made this call on Saturday in Makurdi while interacting with journalists.
The NBA chairman stated that from all indications it seemed that the Federal Government (FG) was not ready to protect the Benue communities.
He recalled that the state government had formally reported to the FG intimating it of the impending attacks owing to threats issued by Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore which were published in several newspapers.
He said that the organisation stated that if the state government went ahead with the implementation of the Anti-Open Grazing Law 2017 it would mobilize its members to resist the law.
He stated that despite the report by the state government to the FG and several reminders nothing was done to avert the attacks which were recently carried out hence the need for the international community to wade in to salvage the situation.
He further called on Gov. Samuel Ortom and the National Assembly members from the state and other well meaning citizens of the state to ensure that the perpetrators of the heinous act were brought to book.
“They must all unite irrespective of their party differences in ensuring that the problem is solved now, once and for all.
‘’Enough Benue blood had been spilled to water the unity of Nigeria and no criminal, however, highly placed will be be permitted to inflict unjustified mayhem on the dignified Benue people,’’ he said.
He also called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the actors of the heinous crime in order to dissuade the egalitarian Benue people from being disenchanted with the Federal Government.
He entreated the Benue people to observe the law and keep watch over their territory in order not to be overrun by herdsmen in their usual manner.
He also commended Ortom for ensuring that the anti-open grazing law was implemented and urged him to ensure the safety of lives and property of his people.
