Benue First Lady flags off MNCHW

Benue first lady Dr. Eunice Ortom, on Monday flagged off the second round of Maternal, New Born  and Child Health week in Makurdi,the State capital.

Dr. Mrs. Ortom  charged mothers to actively participate in the immunization exercise  to promote a healthier society.

The first lady who is also an  ambassador for Maternal New Born and Child Health in the state, outlined the benefits of the exercise to include ensuring that every mother has an  opportunity of safe delivery, stronger immunity of their babies and improved hygienic household practices.

She expressed appreciation to Governor Samuel Ortom, wife of the president, Mrs.Aisha Buhari, the Federal Government, World Health Organization and other development partners for the various contributions to improved health care and service delivery.

Mrs. Ortom noted that the rate of deaths resulting from Maternal, newborn and child issues has greatly reduced unlike the past when this particular group was neglected.

Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Doctor Sunday Ongbabo announced that  the state government has targeted about one point two million women and children for the current exercise.

He  thanked Governor Ortom for providing counterpart funds to facilitate the exercise with the hope of making Benue a leading state in primary healthcare  service delivery.

The Executive Secretary, State Primary healthcare Board Doctor Bem Ageda explained that the Maternal new born and child health week was a nationwide exercise aimed at improving the health of mothers and children under the age of five.

He added that activities would include, administration of vitamin A, Iron and Folic acid supplements, deworming. Immunization, HIV testing and counselling, treatment and prevention of malaria and other hygienic household practices.

In their separate goodwill messages Caretaker Chairman, makurdi, Mrs Mwuese Agber, Ter Makurdi Chief Sule Abenga represented by Chief Clement Kulugh, Ter Gwer Chief Dominic Akper and WHO representative, Doctor Tor Ahemen as well as CAN,  all identified with the Governor’s wife on the exercise and pledged to ensure its success in their domains.

Nigerian NewsDirect reports that the Benue first lady  also administered Vitamin A, to some children to kick start the week, while her NGO, Eunice Spring Of Life Foundation. Presented some delivery kits to some pregnant mothers.
