Bauchi Speaker decries using students unions for political gains

Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly Hon. Abubakar Suleiman has decried the engagement of students union in partisan politics, saying the students are now being used for materials and political gains.

The Speaker said this while speaking at an Annual Public Lecture and Award Ceremony of the Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi, yesterday. He said many students associations have derailed from what they were established for and are now engaging in activities which could jeopardise their future.

“Instead of engaging in partisanship and materialism, students unions should promote intellectualism so that we will have great leaders of tomorrow. We should try to inject that spirit of patriotism and selfless service in our students. Our founding fathers who sacrificed their lives for the development of our dear Nation through activism, unionism and subsequently politics didn’t do it this way,” he said.

Represented by his Special Adviser, Comrade Ja’afar Ibrahim Dass, the Speaker charged members of the National Union of Bauchi State Students (NUBASS) to shun dragging the Union into partisanship politics and a platform for accumulation of wealth.

Abubakar commended members of the Union for their efforts to acquire knowledge and pledged that Bauchi State House of Assembly would work hand in hand with the executive to rescue education and promote the welfare of students in the State.
