The Supreme Court on Thursday sacked Mr David Lyon, of  the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the governor elect for Bayelsa state.

The apex court, in an unanimous judgement delivered by Justice Ejembi Ekwo ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Lyon and a fresh one issued to the governorship candidate with the highest votes cast and wide geographical spread in the governorship election held on November 16, 2020.

Lyon was sacked for presenting a running mate with fake certificate in the said election.

With this judgment just delivered, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Diri Duoye with the highest lawful votes and with wide geographical spread will eventually become the next governor of Bayelsa

In a related development, the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) erupted with wild jubilation as news filtered in that the Supreme Court had nullified the election of David Lyon of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as the Bayelsa state governor-elect and awarded it to the candidate of the party, Diri Duoye.

Staff at the Wadata Plaza, Wuse Zone 2 Abuja edifice of the main opposition party jumped out of their offices to dance and sing in joy over the apex court’s ruling.

They sang the songs of praises and thanks to God for granting the party victory even as they expressed confidence that the court will also give a favorable judgment on the Imo state governorship election.

Recall that the Supreme Court has also nullified the election of Emeka Ihedioha of the PDP as the Imo governor and handed victory to Hope Uzodinma of the APC.

Ihedioha has applied to the apex court for a review and a possible reversal of the judgment, which he believes was given in error.
