The chief priest and elders of Umunya in the Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Thursday, threatened to banish troublemakers from the community.
They stated that they would no longer condone attacks on and distraction of the traditional ruler of the area, Igwe Kris Onyekwuluje, by certain persons, who had allegedly vowed to cause trouble in the community.
The chief priest and elders stated this while presiding over a traditional oath-taking by members of the community to be of good behaviour and loyal to constituted authorities.
The oath-taking was attended by indigenes of the community, including members of the town union’s branches across the country.
Onyekwuluje, who organised the oath-taking, said the community needed peace to make progress.
He said he was compelled to call a meeting of the community because some moneybags in the area were instigating members of the community against him, even as he promised to continue to pursue peace.
The elders of the community, led by the chief priest of Ojiana, threatened to banish anyone who would cause trouble in the community henceforth.
A Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Traditional Institution and Community Matters, Mr Benjamin Umerah, who represented Governor Willie Obiano at the function, said there was a need to seek peace in the community to ensure development.
He stated, “Without peace, your community cannot attain development. You already have a highly respected king in the person of Igwe Kris Onyekwuluje; and in my estimation, he has been doing well and the governor, Chief Willie Obiano, regards him highly.
“It will only be good for you to support your king to continue to discharge his duties creditably instead of distracting him with protests and accusations.”
Southern City News recalled that the Umunya community had been in crisis over land-grabbing by some people in the area.
About a month ago, some women and youths of the area protested at the Government House, urging Obiano to remove their monarch for highhandedness and land-grabbing.
