As Akwa Ibom state industrialization goal is becoming a success story with establishment of companies, the state Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) hopes to hit over N100 billion this year 2020.
Within the last four years, it is noted that the following five companies as viz: Jubilee Syringes Manufacturing Company, Metering Solutions Manufacturing Company, Kings Flower Mill and Plywood Company as well as Ibom Airlines were initiated and operational in the state.
The Commissioner of Finance, Mr. Nsikan Linue Nkan gave this assurance during a chat with newsmen at the weekend in Uyo. He said that given the industrialization drive and its success story so far, the state IGR has witnessed a boost in the last two years. He also disclosed that with all the industries added to boost the economy of the state, government is targeting not less than N100billion as Internally Generated Revenue for the year 2020.
Mr. Nkan, though never mention how much the state generated in 2019 but said that the IGR for the year was twice what was generated in 2018 fiscal year.
In his words “Our efforts to boost the economy have boosted our IGR. That of 2019 was almost double what we got in 2018. We shouldn’t do anything less than N100billion in 2020. As we are doing all these industries, they will now pay tax and those employed are also paying taxes to government”.
Nkan also gave us insight to Governor Udom Emmanuel led administration in the state, saying the administration is passionate about transforming the state anchored on 5-point economic agenda. In line with the vision, he posited that the state government has given incentives to over 10,000 farmers to cultivate cassava in the state while those growing rice have also been supported.
In order to ensure food sufficiency in the state besides stepping down prices of these commodities in the market, over 20,000 bags of rice bought were distributed to indigenes of the state by the state government during the yuletide season. “The rice were grown and produced in the state, stressing that the rice production in the state was increasing towards feeding the nation.
The Finance Commissioner finally appealed to journalists in the state to partner with the state government, by reporting her activities and programmes objectively.
