Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that 22 Persons were burnt beyond recognition in an auto crash in Bauchi State.
The accident which claimed the lives of all travellers in the vehicles occurred 48 hours to Eid-il Kabir Celebration in Darazo local government area of Bauchi State on Friday night.
Confirming the accident, the Bauchi Sector Commander of the Corps, Mr. AbdulRasak Najume told Our Correspondent that the auto crash occurred at 8:00pm, involving a Toyota Hiace and a Vectra Car “when one of the drivers was making dangerous overtaking. The incident however claimed the lives of all the travellers in both vehicles.”
Bauchi State Police Command also confirmed the incident to newsmen, the Spokesperson of the Command, DSP Kamal Abubakar Datti said: “The incident happened on Friday night around 9.30pm. It was a head-on collision between a J5 bus vehicle and 18-seater Hummer bus.
“The J5 was coming from Potiskum heading towards Bauchi carrying goats while the Hummer bus was from Bauchi. They had a head-on collision which resulted to fire and 20 people were burnt beyond recognition.”
He however said that: “Nineteen corpses were recognised by family members through the manifest in which they wrote their details at the motor park.”
The Police Spokesman said that a mass burial was held for the deceased on Saturday at 9:00am at Darazo in Darazo Local Government Area of the state.
The FRSC Boss however warned drivers who are plying highways in the Country to always obey the traffic rules and hold the lives of their passengers dearly, saying “80 per cent of road accidents are caused by human errors and negligence, 10 per cent is cause by machine (motor) errors while 10 per cent is cause road factors.
“Some drivers are not qualify to drive at night —because some of them are having sight problem and they engage in dangerous overtaking. Also, we have continued intensifying efforts in making sure that inter-state drivers install speed limiter device,” Najume said.
